Duke of Edinburgh
The internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh program enables our students to contribute to the community and receive acknowledgment for their efforts. HVGS students from Year 9 (aged 14) upwards may participate. The award is a self development program, is non-competitive and encourages people to set and achieve goals at a level appropriate to their needs and ability. The program is based on four types of activities at three levels:
The three levels are Bronze, Silver and Gold, with each level requiring more commitment.
One of the major projects that many of Duke of Edinburgh candidates involve themselves in is Vietnam Community Service trip (pictured 2009 group departure, Sydney airport) . This involves fund raising to buy equipment for construction of house for a family in the area around Sapa. The group then travels to Vietnam and lives with the tribe while they build the house. Even if a candidate does not go they may support those who travel in many fund raising activities.
